You can in fact refill some of the newer Epson carts, but it isn't the easiest task. I say some because I have not opened most of the newer style yet (since I don't own one). I know the carts for the c86 can be refilled., since they look the same as the others, then it is likely that those can also be refilled.I put a message on the Yahoo B/W the print group (those that would be most effected by lack of refillables) asking for genuine Epson empties, but no one felt inclined to take the money for shipping and send any of their trash. I've pretty much given up on finding ways to refill the Epson carts (since I don't need to worry about that yet) as I'm confident that I will always be able to find/build what I need for my printers, when I actually need it.

The biggest problem I see for those wanting to use the new clear plastic spongeless cartridges is the huge difference in quality from cartridge to cartridge. The return rate of these cartridges back to the dealers who sell them is very high. The biggest problem is when a chip is placed on the cartridges and they are then inserted into the printer. The printer doesen't recognize the cartridge even if genuine Epson chips are used on the aftermarket cartridges. This is because the chip's contact points don't lineup properly with the contacts in the head due to bad quality control in manufacturing the aftermarket cartridges. A chip resetter is made to fool the Epson chip and reset it to full. The chip has no sensors to detect the ink level. It estimate the amount of ink you use and tell you the cartridge is empty or full. I always alert you ahead, at least from my own experience.Since the chip resetter can tell the cartridge is full again, you can now refill the cartridge with ink ( what ink to use is a different subject )The OEM cartridge can be used for 3 - 4 refill, the sponge inside will eventually breaks down and have to be disposed of.There are spongless cartridge available.

Prices varies due to quality. Good ones will last you a year or so, depending on how many times you refill. The cartridge has a fine screen filter inside that will eventually clog. Everyone put these on sale claim you never have to replace it. It is not true.Using a high quality ink with the refillable cartridge, you can refill a set of R1800 cartridges for about $13. After learning now to use these cartridges, refilling is a breeze.

New refillable can be refilled without removing the cartridge from the printer. The chip does not need a chip resetter.-Ron. I just bought a chip resetter and yep they really do work. I have printed 12 additional 8x10 prints so far with no loss of color quality. However I find the Epson software does not show the usage of ink in the second round of cartridge use. Sql 2016 rebuild master. Ie: the level is not diminishing as would be expected. Now this is fine since I watch the printer with the lid open so if I see a color start to fade I can shut the printer off before any damgae happens to the printhead.
